MFC buying guide - Renault Koleos
Make no bones about it; the Renault Koleos is a premium SUV from the French carmaker. The Koleos was never a huge success in the country on account of its rather high price. However, for true blue connoisseurs of luxury and quality, this should not be a deterrent. The Koleos makes for an interesting and unique choice. The Koleos does look premium enough for the segment in which it has been positioned. It has also received a mid-life face lift which makes it even more attractive. Will it be worth your money? Let’s find out!
The Premium Renault Koleos
When it comes to the design aspect, the attractiveness of the Koleos has never been in question. It looks radically different when compared to other rivals and this gives it a novel appeal of its own on the road. This will turn heads since it looks different from any SUV out there in this category. The big logo on the front grille is a major draw along with the bold stance. The fluidic inspired design template is quite sleek and smart though the car is not as huge or intimidating as some of the other SUVs in this price band. It is a mixed bag really and depends on your individual perception of what an SUV should look like.
This face lifted version of the Camry will be available in three engine variants globally. These include the 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 litre petrol engines, while in India only the 2.5 litre petrol model and the 2.5 litre Hybrid model will be offered. The engine comes coupled with a six-speed automatic gearbox, while the Hybrid model comes mated to a CVT transmission. It is expected that the same engine will continue to power the face lifted edition of this car.

The Koleos gets a 2.0 litre diesel engine along with a 4WD drivetrain. The engine churns out 360 Nm and 170 BHP. There is a six speed automatic transmission unit used for the car along with a manual option. The latter does lead to some turbo lag but highway driving is always enjoyable with this SUV. City driving is majorly aided by the automatic unit. There is prompt responsiveness and the engine has urgency at lower revs. The diesel engine has ample power though 100 kilometres per hour can be touched in 11.9 seconds.
The Koleos offers good ride and handling. The suspension setup is good and bad roads can be tackled quite well. It is only larger potholes or bumps that slightly make their presence felt inside.
The Bottomline Verdict? The Koleos is priced quite steeply and this may be a deterrent. Otherwise it is a sleek, feature loaded and high performing SUV that may be worth buying.
