MFC Buying Guide - Volkswagen Passat
The Passat is Volkswagen's answer to something called supreme luxury. The first generation Passat marked a huge departure from the likes of the Beetle and similar cars. It brought in front wheel cars with good power. The fifth generation model even had an eight cylinder engine globally which was a little over the top as per many of us connoisseurs. However, the car has been continually refined and is now in its eighth generation. The Passat is one of the most sophisticated saloons you will find. It makes use of the MQB modular transversal architecture from Volkswagen.
The Delightful Volkswagen Passat
Design wise, the Passat is sleek without being particularly head turning though this is subjective. The proportions and stance are nice with a lower body and long wheelbase. There are nice horizontal lines with stylish LED tail lamps which change graphics to vertical from vertical in case you apply the brakes. The front fascia is contemporary and will certainly to those who like to keep it understated yet elegant. The Passat has a 1.4 litre turbo petrol engine along with a 2.0 litre TDI 240 BHP diesel unit. The petrol engine is really quick and adequately responsive. The cylinder deactivation feature is handy as it shuts down two cylinders when they are not required. Fuel economy is also very good, almost touching 20 kilometres per litre. 100 kilometres per litre can be hit in 8.6 seconds which is also pretty impressive.

The diesel engine is the pick of the lot when it comes to driving pleasure. The four cylinder diesel has ample power and pulls the car swiftly above 200 kilometres per hour. The top speed of this engine is 240 kilometres per hour and it is paired to a seven speed dual clutch transmission unit. The handling of the Passat is very agile and light. The optional adaptive chassis makes it a very nice car when it comes to overall comfort and you can change modes by flicking a few buttons only. The interiors are amazing though they are not as chirpy as you would want. The Passat is lavish and spacious with top class knobs and buttons. There is a TFT display unit which comes with navigation abilities.

The Passat is so good that it might even give German cousins like Audi nightmares in the ride and handling, engine and driving pleasure and interior departments. It comes loaded with features and is one of the most luxurious sedans in the country at present. With its powerful engine, stylish exteriors and amazing comfort, the Passat is a stand-out vehicle in its class though there is tough competition from the likes of the Toyota Camry or the Skoda Superb among others.
The Passat, however, is certainly an emotional buy if you are passionate about driving and love your fair share of comfort and luxury while on the road. Needless to say, it does not come cheap!
