What you should keep in mind before buying a used Maruti Alto
If you’re stepping up from a motorcycle to a car of if you’ve just learnt to drive, the Maruti Alto is indeed a good option for you. For those looking to purchase their first budget small car, Alto is undoubtedly part of the discussion, and even more so when buying a used one. Not only is it small and easy to drive, but is also low on maintenance and is extremely efficient. When you look out for a used Alto, you will get several engine options – there was a 800cc 3-cylinder motor which is essentially the same one that works force on the current Alto 800, a 1.1 litre 4-cylinder mill and of course the Alto K10 with the 1.0 litre 3 cylinder motor.
Being just a basic car, it just has the things you need and that makes it all the easier to maintain. The Alto did not come with a factory fitted music system, so it is advisable to get it checked before actually making the purchase. Like every car, the Alto too has received updates from time to time right from its launch in the early 2000s. Keeping that in mind, it is best to opt for a car that is relatively newer. Models from after 2006-2007 also come at a very affordable price and if luck favours you, you might find one with very few kilometers on the clock. Since the Alto retails at a pretty reasonable price, it comes fairly cheap in the used market too, and thus, it is a good car to place your bets on.

The Maruti Alto gives a decent performance in the city as well as for short highway runs. Given its small dimensions, you can maneuver it through traffic with ease and even park it smoothly in the tightest of spots. While the 800cc Alto is available in the used car market pretty easily, if you want either of the two larger motors, some fair amount of search needs to be done. When it comes to the interiors, you will be greeted by a very basic dashboard layout with minimal features. It can comfortably seat three average—sized Indians at the back without having to struggle for shoulder or leg room. As far as features are concerned, the base LX variant of the Alto came with optional AC but the higher LXi and the VXi (1.1 litre) were equipped with AC as well as power steering.

It is a known fact that the Marutis have a good reputation for its frugal and maintenance free engines and the Alto to return around 14-15 kilometres to a litre of fuel. You can get an Alto in the resale market at a price as low as Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 2.5 lakhs for the latest Alto 800. Though some of the first generation Altos are still on sale in the used car market, it is advisable to pick a car that is at the max 6-7 years old. It goes without saying that the price may vary depending on the kilometres on the clock and the condition of the car.
