Tata Motors, the Indian auto maker is currently developing a premium SUV model that will be built based on the Land Rover Discover Sport’s L550 platform. With a codename of Tata Q501, the SUV will come with the same machinery and components as the Discovery. The Pune based car maker has recently exported a few prototype models of the Tata Q501 to USA for testing purposes.

Driving the Tata Q501 will be the 2.0 litre MultiJet II diesel engine which has been sourced from Fiat and it will deliver an estimated output of 170bhp. This engine might be offered with both manual as well as automatic transmission options. While the base model is likely to come with a 2WD (two wheel drive), the one or two top of the line models are expected to get AWD (all wheel drive) system. Most of the structural components of this new Tata SUV are expected to be borrowed from the Discovery Sport including the floor pan. However, the design and style of the Q501 will be quite different from the Discovery.
The car will carry the signature SUV traits such as a impressive ground clearance, hefty body build and heavy body cladding. The Tata Q501 SUV is expected to come with both 5 seats and 7 seats options to target both car enthusiasts and family consumers, respectively. To add off road capabilities, the car maker might offer high water wading capacity as well as ground clearance to tackle rugged road conditions.
The new Tata SUV might hit the India shores in the year 2018. One must note that the car maker has not yet made any official remarks about its the time of its arrival. We will get to know about its exact launch timeline as soon as the company disclosed it.
