Jeep Working on New Compass SUV for Indian Market
Following years of delay, finally in August 2016, the iconic Jeep brand finally made its foray into India. However due to steep pricing for the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee, the brand isn’t accessible to most Indian car-buyers. The upcoming Jeep C-SUV, to be called ‘Compass’, will be locally manufactured at FCA’s Ranjangaon facility near Pune and is slated to arrive in showrooms by the first half of 2017. Its price in India is expected to be around Rs. 20-25 lakhs. The American carmakers have officially unveiled the 2017 Compass compact SUV for the world. Positioned between the entry-level Renegade and Cherokee SUV in the automaker’s line-up, this car is based on the stretched version of the Small Wide 4x4 architecture.

As far as design is concerned, the new Compass replicated the design language of the Grand Cherokee and clearly gets its proportions on point. The nose features Jeep’s trademark grille with sleek headlamps on either side. It gets dual tone paint job. Other highlights of the front end are a sculpted hood and chrome appliqué near the lower end of the bumper. At the back it gets split tail lamps with LED detailing. The neat-looking cabin finished in black and grey has been inspired by the Grand Cherokee. The lit of features include a UConnect touch-screen infotainment system, a TFT screen that can be configured to show instrument cluster, keyless entry, start-stop button and a 9 speaker audio system from Beats Audio.

Coming to the mechanicals, the all-new Compass will get front-wheel drive as standard, while All-Wheel Drive will be available as optional right from the start. The car is expected to derive its power from 2.0 litre petrol and diesel engine options, while a 2.4 litre naturally aspirated motor will also be available in developed markets like the US. Transmission options will include a 9-speed automatic, while a manual is also likely to be offered. Internationally, Jeep products also get a 2.2 litre Diesel that makes around 185 bhp and 400 Nm. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has announced that globally there will be 17 power-train options available on the new Jeep Compass, so definitely there will be ample choices. More details on the newest compact SUV are yet to arrive and auto giant will be revealing additional images and information about the vehicle at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November this year, where it makes its North American debut.

In India, it is expected to rival the likes of the upcoming Hyundai Tucson, and entry level variants of the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. India will get the new Compass with a 2.0 L Multijet diesel. The engine is likely to churn out around 170 bhp of max power and about 350Nm of peak torque. According to estimates, it will deliver a mileage of around 15-16 kmpl, with the city mileage being around Rs. 11-12 kmpl, and that in highway being roughly 14-17 kmpl.
